Crest View in Crest View
Crest View Elementary is not only one of Boulder’s best elementary schools, but the namesake of our neighborhood. And with very good reason, it’s the heart of the neighborhood—both figuratively and geographically.
Learning is on the forefront with a well-rounded staff, academic contests and hands-on learning. (Check out streaming result updates on SchoolDigger.com: Crest View Elementary School)
Additional programs include band, choir, talented & gifted, science fair and student council, as well as math, science and homework clubs. Crest View also offers Junior Great Books and engages in Boulder’s Garden to Table. And after school enrichment classes differ yearly, but have featured languages, yoga, cooking and art in the past.
And there’s a twist on a child’s typical outdoor education!
Crest View Elementary’s Habitat was built in 1990. This “outdoor learning center” is a 1.3-acre marsh and prairie site that has three streams, a small pond, shrub thickets, ponderosa pine and wild plum. Curriculum has been developed to incorporate Habitat into everyday lesson plans.
And at 2:30 p.m. daily, a typical chain of yellow school buses takes shape. But interestingly, there’s another traffic jam on school lots—first through fifth grade bikers. These peaceful and secluded streets offer a safe travel to and from school; so many schoolchildren are known to prefer biking (or walking) to class.
In fact, Crest View Elementary actually started the Freiker program, which stands for FREquent bIKER, and is now called Boltage. Read more about the program here: Home of the Freiker
The school also participates in Eco-Cycle School Program, which aims to increase recycling and reduce waste. Crest View has been award a Green Star, as it was one of the first schools in the U.S. to reduce waste in every aspect of school life.
ReachOut Crest View, the school’s Parent Teacher Organization, sponsors forums on education-related issues, oversees parent/student school events and organizes a slew of fundraisers to benefit students.
And rural Boulder’s Crest View Elementary does share its turf with members of the four-legged community.
But it’s not all wide-eyed deer and fluffy bunnies in this area, bears and mountain lions oftentimes saunter by for a neighborhood visit too. But Principal (and Superman) Ned Levine is out to protect schoolchildren, and has been known to hold recess indoors when notified of a sighting.
